7 Stages of Male Pattern Baldness: Male Balding Patterns 101
What's the Norwood Scale? Synopsis The Norwood scale (or the Hamilton-Norwood scale) is the leading classification system used to measure the scope of . Men usually lose hair in one of the common patterns for many decades. The Norwood scale provides easy-to-reference images that indicate different baldness stages. There are several other classification scales used by doctors, researchers and hair transplant surgeons. Some classification scales include both sexes or focus on female pattern baldness. The Norwood scale, however, is the measure that is most commonly used by clinicians when discussing the male pattern baldness. It provides a benchmark to diagnose the degree of baldness, discuss treatment options and measure the effectiveness of the treatment. The Norwood scale has seven stages. Each stage measures the severity and pattern of hair loss. How is hair loss for each stage? Hair loss can be diagnosed with a physical exam and medical history. Most hair loss is diagnosed as male pattern baldness, but if you are young, woman, or experience unusual hair loss, then your doctor may want to rule out other possible causes. A dermatologist or hair loss specialist can examine your scalp to identify the pattern and degree of your hair loss. Your doctor may also tune some hair and examine your hair follicles. Hair loss treatments are the most successful when they start early. It is easier to reduce hair loss that is to stimulate new hair growth. The hair follicles that stop producing the hair fall asleep after about two years and cannot be reactivated. Once a significant hair loss has occurred, surgical procedures can be the best option. Free sale treatments (OTC) Unprescription treatments include: Prescription Treatments Depending on the severity of your hair loss and your success with OTC treatments, your doctor may recommend the prescription medication (Proscar, Propecia). Finasteride is a pill that is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat men with hair loss. According to , it decreases hair loss by about 88 percent of men and stimulates growth in about 66 percent of men. Procedures There are also medical procedures available for treating hair loss, including: Male pattern hair loss is caused by a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. Their genes, inherited from both parents, determine their sensitivity to hormones called androgens, particularly a so-called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Each strand of hair starts in a hair follicle and usually grows for two to six years before entering a resting phase and falling. When the follicle begins to grow a new hair, the cycle begins again. Increased androgens in capillary follicles can lead to shorter cycles of hair growth, lasting only weeks or months. DHT stimulates the process of miniaturization, which makes new hair grow shorter and thinner than before. Eventually, capillary follicles become too small to produce new hair. Prevention and treatment of hair loss go hand in hand. People begin to warm up a wide range of different ages and lose hair at very different speeds, so it is up to you to decide when to start taking preventive action. Hair loss treatments such as minoxidil and finasteride work to prevent hair loss in most men. The Norwood scale is a tool that you and your doctors can use to measure the extent of male pattern baldness. In the early stages, hair loss can be treated with medication. In the later stages, there are several surgical options. Last medical review on 13 February 2018More information here

What are the four stages of hair growth? Growth and hair loss may seem like a simple process, but the hair growth cycle is composed of four different phases. These stages of hair growth have been in great depth to better understand how hair grows and what can be done to prevent or treat premature hair loss. The first three phases —anagen, catagen and telogen — cover the growth and ripening of the hair and the activity of capillary follicles that produce individual hairs. During the end, or exogenous, the phase, the "old" hair sheds, although usually a new hair is preparing to take its place. Each phase has its own timetable, which can be affected by age, nutrition and general health. That means there's a way to help ensure your hair follows a healthy growth cycle. Keep reading to learn more. The stages of hair growth begin with the anagen phase. It is the longest phase, which lasts about 3 to 5 years for hair in the head, although for some people a single hair could continue to grow for 7 or more years. Fortunately, the anagen phase differs with different types of hair. For example, the anagen phase for eyebrows hairs and pubic hairs is much shorter than the hair phase of the scalp. During the anagen phase, your hairs are pushing out that they will continue to grow until they are cut or until they reach the end of their useful life and fall. At any time, around the hairs in the head are in the anagen phase. The catagen phase begins when the anagen phase ends, and tends to last about 10 days or so. During this chapter, hair follicles are contracted and hair growth decreases. The hair is also separated from the bottom of the hair follicle, but remains in place during its last days of growth. Only about 5 percent of the hairs in the head are in the catagen phase at any given time. The telecommunications phase usually lasts about 3 months. It is estimated that between 10 and 15 percent of the scalp hairs are at this stage. Hairs don't grow during the telegen phase, but they don't usually fall outside either. The telogen phase is also when the new hairs begin to form in follicles that have just released hair during the catagen phase. Some consider the phase of the telegen the cooking phase, but many scientists have divided this stage into two parts: the stages of the telegen and the exogen. The exogenous phase is essentially an extension or part of the telegenous stage of hair growth. During the exogenous phase, the hair is shed from the scalp, often helped along washing and brushing. Losing 50 to 100 hairs per day during the exogenous phase is normal. During the exogenous phase, which can last 2 to 5 months, new hairs are growing in the follicles while old hairs fall. Having depends on genetic and hormonal levels, which are largely beyond your control, as well as manageable factors related to a healthy lifestyle and proper hair care. Some of the best strategies for the four stages include: Good nutrition Because the hair is done in much of the protein, you should keep the protein intake by focusing on . This includes: A 2019 study in the journal also found that the sufficient intake of the following nutrients was associated with healthy hair growth:, and it may also be associated with the promotion of healthy hair growth. Stress reduction Reports of three premature conditions of different hair loss related to . Includes:Learn to skill with the help of , , , and can help reduce your stress, which can have many positive health benefits. Proper care of the hairThe healthy hair care begins with the right choice Find products designed for your hair type, whether it be oily, dry, fine, treated in colors, etc. The right can also make the difference, but finding the right products can take some judgment and error. Pay attention to how your hair responds to several shampooes and conditioners. It is also important to promote healthy growth. Avoid very hot water when the shampoo and towel are bathed gently when it's over. Hair is more vulnerable to damage when wet. Lower heat when drying the hair can also make a difference. The four stages of hair growth include anagen, catagen, telegen and exogen. Each phase lasts for a different time. A healthy lifestyle of low stress, proper diet and soft hair care should help promote healthy hair growth for a long time. If you think you're losing your hair faster than you're used to, talk to a doctor. An underlying condition that is disrupting the stages of hair growth can be the fault, and treating it quickly can help slow hair loss and preserve the healthy hair that has gone.
