Duranta are not the most popular trees for bonsai and are difficult to work with as once the branches fix that they are rigid. However, once they reach higher levels of refinement, they are very captivating.*Note, they have thorns, so I suggest you ruin them before any work is done unless you are a rebel! We have this "bush" actually as a landscape plant at the front of our house in August 2016. This was never meant to be a bonsai, and he still doesn't know if that's the target yet. Here I am a picture of the bush when it was planted in original front: As you can see, it only grows on one side. It was bought this way intentionally due to the wall of the house. I figured less work, it's in shape, just let it fall! He did well, but last year he's been through a crazy trip. Hurricane, MASSIVE white flies infestation, a bad case of moho sooty obviously, scale, be eaten by ducks and also be hit by the Florida sun for 8 hours a day in this location. Right now I wasn't thinking about bonsai about it, I just want to make it the easiest life. So he went out! I don't have photos of the repot (I'm sorry), but he left very hard after repotting. I haven't taken too many roots since I was already stressed by the conditions I mentioned earlier. But, I thought I was probably going to be cruak. Although I didn't give up and I was patient. After 3 days of the appearance that was done, he bounced! I kept it in the front covered courtyard, which is full shade, for 2 weeks. After that he went to the partial shadow and got a good pruning: It is by no means the most pleasant example to work with. First I removed all the dead, broken, and branches too much mold/scaly, they cut him a tad and left only a few leaves. I still had no idea where to go with him or what trunk or branches to keep from here, but I started getting some ideas. Here it is (at a different angle) approximately a month after the last picture: It is not yet nice, but better. So far it only cuts and grows and has some movement. Not every good move, but this will take a while to develop. I still kept all these branches because I don't know what I'll keep for the future yet. I'm not trying to change the world with this tree. Your purpose is to keep me busy. It's a tree to work on while waiting for the good to develop. More bonsai suffers from excess care and may not be enough care / pruning. I suggest you also get some cheap trees to cut in. There's no shame with this, so everybody get out. Anyway, earlier this month, April did a little more work. He started to return well and was free of pests. So he only has one cable. I didn't need to wire the whole way through the trunk and I could have started in the branch fork. I was using a new copper cable that I hadn't used before and I felt like... well seeing how I liked it. The wiring is a bit careless as I had my daughter screaming for me while trying to do this, but it serves its purpose. I've wired and placed the branches in less than 5 minutes. I've let it grow and I've only reduced the leaves where it got too thick. It's growing fast and it hasn't even been a month before cutting some shorter branches to lower it, and it had to remove about half the leaves. A quick breakthrough only a few weeks and some more branches were ready to wire. It is better than the wires just before barking, as they become very rigid afterwards. So here's a picture of her today after a little more wiring: As time passes, I think I can get a tree of this kind. I see some pretty lines. It is also beginning to lend itself to some different styles. The double trunk has to go, I just haven't figured out what to keep yet. What do you see? Right now I see ugliness, but in the future there could be a good tree...
